Re: The End of "Genres"

I am sorry, I have dealt with a world of rudeness on this, and I was serious about what I said - I do not trust Davydov's judgment or maturity in vocal matters. The first time around, he picked up his marbles and went home instead of creating more categories, this time he simply closed discussion in...

Re: The End of "Genres"

"@Operalala — I can see from your questions that you still have misapprehensions that will only be dispelled once you see the system up and running." Well, yes, I have misapprehensions that Vocalists' needs will be met in any way. One thing we all learn in life is to take with a big grain ...

Re: The End of "Genres"

"Davydov will (must) listen to your (informed) opinions, but he will also have to power to ignore them should they fall into the above categories. I didn't pick Davydov to know more than every other IMSLP contributor; I picked Davydov to synthesize all the opinions (and make final decisions whe...

Re: The End of "Genres"

Feldmahler, 1) This is also a problem with having multiple liniages for individual tags - someone searching instrumental works would have to wade through vocal works, and vice versa. 2) I'm not saying that a symphony cannot be categorized a "Symphony" because that's it's title, but titles ...

Re: The End of "Genres"

I would like to point out several problems with these categories, some of which are general, and some of which effect Vocalists: In General: 1) Many of these tags will cause problems when they are incorporated into a category tree because they cross genres. For example, "Airs" can be instr...

Re: The End of "Genres"

Steltz, that's not it - there are some serious issues that need to be addressed.

Re: The End of "Genres"

Davydov,
Ah, I see it was moved from the location given earlier in this thread.
Please respond to the concerns posted above, before unilaterally announcing a discussion's closure.
Thank you.

Re: The End of "Genres"

I have read the project notes; this is where my above concerns come from. And you have taken down the Project Notes page.

Re: The End of "Genres"

1a. "Vocal music" and "Dance music" should be the higher categories respectively for Opera and Ballet. How much of a need is there to look up specifically operas and ballets together? 1b. But what is the "Higher work type category" that everything from "Peter and t...

Re: The End of "Genres"

1. Thank you for not lumping operas and ballets in one category. However, the category "stage works" doesn't apply to the "concert operas", i.e. Damnation de Faust, which would be expected to be found under "operas". Also "Incidental music" sounds like a catch...

Re: The End of "Genres"

Pearlnerd, I'm more concerned that this be set up in a manner that will be self-sustaining and future-oriented, and not just suit somebody's desire to have the word "Lieder" to look up. I would love to see drop-down menus, if that can be implemented on the work pages. This will require a f...

Re: The End of "Genres"

This form of "Tagging" can work only if it is standardized, and modularized (like the current 3 fields in the workpage template: Genre, Instrumentation and Language). 1. Work type/Genre - This must be both logical and not infinitely large. 2. The Language for vocal works - no specialist vo...

Re: The End of "Genres"

A "designated Project Team" at a volunteer Wiki. That pretty ambitious. Do you have a project team? Will it be around, and tagging hundreds of tags following your "set procedure", forever in the future? And are your "types of works" really "very simple"?

Re: The End of "Genres"

Steltz, the point I am making is that with hundreds of category permutations, so much will be "mis-cataloged" that your custom-made search terms will not bring up what you are looking for, if you yourself did not catalog them, because no one will actually go through all those categories fo...

Re: The End of "Genres"

Would it not be a better idea to look into getting the Instrumentation and Languages cataloged, than having users slog through perhaps hundreds? of categories for every permutation of Work Type, Instrumentation, and Language in the database?
