This all stems from a discussion about Han Gal as editor of the Brahms Gessamtausgabe. In a nutshell, I initially mentioned that the volumes edited by Gal (who died in 1987) might be protected under Canadian law even though they are all free in the US (for several reasons) despite having been publis...

La, les, le, el, gli, die, des, der, etc.
All are the equivalent of "the" and are normally ignored in alphabetization. It appears that some have been fixed but others are still being alphabetized. I've no idea of how difficult it would be to set things up so that the wiki automatically did this when new titles are added, so it's j...

Bizet: L'Arlesienne recommendation
I recommend that the name be changed to "L'Arlesienne" from "L'Arlesienne Suites." A vocal / piano score for the complete incidental music was actually published by Choudens in about 1873, though it's fairly hard to come by. The second suite was arranged by Ernest Guiraud (1837-1...

Back when I was a music student, a musicology prof. made me do a number of these for various works. I kept them and have been posting over at IMSLP after doing a bit of updating via my library account. I've got them up for Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre and Chabrier's España also. I looks like what's re...

You're quite right about Stravinsky's arrangement being for 1 piano, 4 hands. The Dover is a reprint of the one issued by Muzika in 1965. So is the International Edition. I'll put a publication history up on the IMSLP page in a few days. I've compiled a number of these for various works over the yea...

Stravinsky made the 2 piano, 4 hands reduction himself. Dover has reprinted this (origially issued by Edition Russe in 1920 or so) sells it for a very reasonable price. Here's the link for the Amazon page: http://www.amazon.com/Spring-Piano-Hands-Classical-Keyboard/dp/0486445399/sr=1-3/qid=117013767...

Stravinsky was furious over Disney's inclusion of his work in Fantasia . Part of it was because the work was PD in the USA from the day it was published due to his Russian citizenship (which meant he had no choice but to grant permission and likely received less in royalties than he would have been ...

Interesting reference. Crumb, BTW, draws all of his own pieces by hand. I remember and editor for C. F. Peters talking about this years ago at a publisher's convention. Using a combination of programs like Finale or Sibelius plus Photoshop and Illustrator, it is actually possible to produce such ext...

Copyright Issue - Mompou - remove files
I just checked. The "Canciones y Danzas" were not published until 1929 by Salabert. Mompou died in 1987, which means his works are definitely under copyright in Canada, and the 1929 publication date (for #1-4 only, the other 8 weren't published until 1949) means that it will be tied up in ...

Upload problems
Nothing seems to upload for me today. I continually get nonsense messages about the file being empty - or the file name being mis-spelled. The only positive thing I can say about IMSLP's host is that the downloads are at least nice and fast. Too bad the page loads and uploading can't be the same!

Actually, I think the aqua background color has been there quite a while. The width of the template changed recently, though. I have to scroll to the right to see it all. I'm running Internet Explorer Mac version 5.1 on an ancient G4 Mac with OS 9.22. I need to upgrade soon, but the $$$ has to come ...
