I didn't realize that it was included in one of the Dover collections, Goldberg. I stand corrected about its rarity. Did they reprint the Durand, or the German issue (which I think might be different engraving - though it can be hard to tell from library listings)? At any rate, yes the EMB series ha...

If you go to the IMSLP page, you'll now see a publication history for the piece. It should be fairly easy to obtain a copy in most versions. The Liszt transcription is something of a rarity, BTW.

I don't think it's up yet, Kongming. I look forward to seeing more Holst on the IMSLP site, though. He's one of my favorite composers. Most of his work is PD here in the US and I think just about everything is free overseas since he died more than 70 years ago.

IMSLP has been horribly slow for me for the past several days. There are also frequent "Internal Server Error" messages that result when clicking on a simple navigation link. I have a DSL connection, and I'm used to things running at a fairly decent speed. While the download speeds are exc...

The original work, The Planets - suite for large orchestra, is pubic domain in the USA. It was published in 1921 by Goodwin & Tabb. Ltd., London. (later J. Curwen & Sons, Ltd.). Imogen renewed it in 1949 and the copyright ran for a full 75-year term from the date of publication - entering th...

I happen to own the Kalmus reprint. The total number of music pages (all 3 volumes) is 1110. Kalmus did not reprint the preface, the libretto, etc. that appear either before or after the score itself. They kept the Muzika page numbering, table of contents and instrumentation pages though. In light o...

I would also like to nominate the outstanding collection of Lully files from both the Biblioteque National de France and University of North Texas. I think most of these were posted by Peter. Anyone seriously interested in Lully should visit IMSLP as their first stop. Very impressive.

It's a huge score (Sleeping Beauty). There are only two full scores that were ever produced. The first was a lithographed score reproduced from a copyist's manuscript and issued by D. Rahter (the German agent of Tchaikovsky's publisher Jurgenson) in about 1890. This is extraordinarily rare as only a...

The Planets is public domain in the USA and practically everywhere else in the world (Holst having died in 1934). Merely reprinting a work at a later date does not grant a new copyright. Only a new edition of the work is entitled to copyright protection. This can include adding editorial markings an...

There is nothing copyrightable about CDSM's PDF files. The potential problem we face is when someone posts a CDSM file complete with their logo, which just happened with the Paganini: Violin Concerto No. 1. That's a trademark violation which they could sue for. The bh2000 scans appear to be CDSM fil...

Of course, this also applies to loads of titles. Take Ravel's La Valse or Debussy's La Mer. They are normally alphabetized under V and M respectively. Another annoying thing about computerized alpha-numeric ordering is how a Symphony No. 2 will appear among the Syphony No. 20's instead...

I'll need to check on this, but I think that Holst's own 2-piano reduction was not published until 1949. It was most likely renewed by Imogen in 1977 or 1978. Renewals from 1978 are on line, and they are getting some of the earlier years up online recently as well. If it wasn't renewed, and no NIE w...

If you happen to own the PDF plug-in PitStop (an expensive plug-in for the Professional version of Acrobat), it's possible to strip out all the footers in a given document with a few commands. There are probably other PDF utilities out there which will do the same for a lot less. You might try aslin...
