Re: An idea for a musical challange...
There’s currently about 700 known exoplanets and several other dwarf planets (Ceres, Eris, and some that should be, such as Sedna, Haumea, Quaoar, etc.) in our solar system — why would you have someone duplicate Colin Matthews’ work on scoring a movement for Pluto with all those others ignored? It’s...

Re: Five new French composers available on IMSLP
Not to rain on Daphnis’ parade, but this makes me so jealous of you USians having access to those scores. (Yes, I know it’s a case of swings and roundabouts for a whole lot of stuff that is under copyright in the US!)
Well done all the same :)

Zaslaw’s fairly certain this is spurious, which is why it’s in the Anhang C in the latest Köchel. Just sayin’…

Re: YouTube videos
My understanding is that notification of copyright infringements and takedowns do occur from time to time (with greater frequency for commercially viable material), and do we really want to be taking the word of the YouTubers that they have permission to post their stuff? How would we assess / guara...

Re: Hello all:)
@ Philidor; the other three who posted here in this thread yesterday and earlier today turned out to be sock-puppets; when you said “welcome all” I think they must have taken it a bit too literally.

Re: Beethoven, alphabetization of works starting with "Das"
If {{DEFAULTSORT}} is working, then you’d add some wiki text to the page, e.g. {{DEFAULTSORT:Geheimnis, WoO 145 (Beethoven, Ludwig van)}} which sorts under G rather than Das (and likewise for the other cases). This applies the sorting key to every category simultaneously. {{DEFAULTSORT}} may not be ...

Re: Fanfares by Fanfare
Yes, John Cage said those concerts "changed my life." And your father’s advocacy for composers like Edgard Varèse had an obvious influence on later musicians such as Frank Zappa, for which many people would be equally grateful, I think. Thank you very much for adding detail of your father...

Re: Purcell, King Arthur (Z.628)
Under the Misc. Notes of the Taylor full score you could add a line with the following format: A modern re-typeset of this edition with vocal score and parts is available at the [[cpdl:King Arthur (Henry Purcell)|Choral Public Domain Library]]. Note the wiki formatting for CPDL uses similar formatti...

Re: IMSLP Merchandise
I think IMSLP was something of a provisional name in the first place, until something better came along. That said, so many people know of IMSLP as “Im–slip dot org” or “Eye-Em-Ess-Ell-Pee” that it would be unlikely for the url to be deprecated completely. The title is fairly much a descriptor, or a...

Re: IMSLP Merchandise
Please engage sense of taste before committing to a design, Nick. A friend (who used to sing alto) had a traditional C clef (without stave lines, note) as a tattoo — very nicely executed too — and then said how she was disappointed by it being obsolescent upon moving up to sing soprano all the time ...

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories
It seems like Stephen West’s option 1) is the only practical site-wide option, and I am glad to add to Al’s endorsement. Option 3) ignores the technical issue that the use of “viola da gamba” on certain repertoire pages (French Baroque) would have to be squared up against categorisation under the na...

Re: Fanfares by Fanfare
Hi Electra, that’s very interesting. These sorts of things occasionally come in and then go out of vogue. For example, I remember the Australian Broadcasting Corporation commissioning a dozen or so fanfares from Australian composers to be premièred by the various state orchestras during its 60th ann...

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories
Viola da gamba could be used in a limited non-categorisation way, say, in the Instrumentation field of a work page. But it would be necessary to use one and only one name for the heading and category system, even though it might look wrong for certain repertoire. And I’m not even touching the record...

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories
The only problem with your recommendations is that it is impractical to use two names for essentially one family of instruments and maintain consistency across the entire site, since the instrumental categories are maddeningly literal — we don’t, for instance, call an English horn a cor anglais depe...

Re: John Bishop
See my post above. The LinkEd templates don’t have an option for customised display (which is not usually wanted for >99% of names). This John Bishop is in the <1% of names that cause a problem. As per my initial post upthread, use: [[:Category:Bishop, John (d.1890)|John Bishop]][[Category:Bishop, J...
