Lost works you would most like to hear or find the score.
As it says in the title, which lost work would you most like to find the score of? For me, it would be the overture played at that first performance of Rossinis version of The Barber of Seville. I've seen many and contradictory things about it, both that it was recycled for the Opera 'La Gazzetta' a...

Re: Litolff: 3 Lieder ohne Worte, Op.51 - Unprintable
I'm not sure what's the reason for this. I have dowloaded the first piece and printed page 4 just to see if it works. The printout is correct, so I can give only some hints: Is the pdf ok? (it's better to download the score via right mouse on Download button and then "Save as" instead of ...

Litolff: 3 Lieder ohne Worte, Op.51 - Unprintable
I downloaded the three 3 Lieder ohne Worte, Op.51 by Litolff with the intention of printing them out and giving them to a friend who is always on the lookout for interesting solo piano pieces and found that aside from the title page in the first PDF the rest of the pages printed out blank.

Shostakovich Quartettsatz?
I've recently discovered that the Bretano String Quartet has been performing a program which they call "Fragments: Connecting Past and Present", the links below cover the project which involved writing modern pieces to join with unfinished works by famous composers. http://www.examiner.com...

Dvoraks Quartettsatz, help wanted to find sources
I've just created for Wikipedia a short article on the Quartet Movement in F major Dvorak wrote before abandoning it to write the String Quartet in C major Op. 61. Quartet movement in F major (Dvořák) As it stands I feel the article is incomplete and I was wondering if anyone could point me to some ...

Re: The British Symphony Competition of 1876
35 full scale symphonies? Makes one realize the massive amount of music that's been written in the 19th century, and the possibilities of digging up some hidden gems. Too bad most modern orchestras are reluctant to program anything that isn't a proven success with the audience, so the same couple o...

Re: The British Symphony Competition of 1876
Searching on google news turned up an announcement of the competition in the Boston Evening Telegraph of the 3rd of April 1876. Thirty-five composers have entered for the symphony competition at the Alexandra Palace. The only conditions were that the symphonies should be hitherto unpublished and unp...

Re: The British Symphony Competition of 1876
I have found a reference to the competion in something I found on Google Books, it looks like one of the entrants may have been a woman with a connection to Macfarren. ...it appears that a third prize was created for Oliveria Prescott's Aikestis Symphony. Prescott was amanuensis to Macfarren at this...

Re: The British Symphony Competition of 1876
It seems that Davenport was Macfarren's son-in-law, so how could Macfarren's choice be anything other than ... totally ... objective? Indeed. I did a quick websearch (Using both Bing & Google) after posting and turned up nothing other than brief references in the context of Stanford's 1st symph...

The British Symphony Competition of 1876
From a British Classical Music: The Land of Lost Content post on Stanfords 1st Symphony: It was written for a competition organised by the Alexandra Palace in London in 1876. It was for the best two symphonies written by British composers with prizes of £20 and £5 pounds being awarded respectively. ...

Re: Cadenza's to Beethovens 3rd Piano Concerto
It's been over two years since I posted this but I thought I'd add another cadenza to the request that does not seem to be on the site yet, namely that written by Thalberg, publication details not known at this time.

Goldmark - Violin Concerto No. 2
I've read several times that Goldmark wrote a second Violin Concerto that was never performed and remained in manuscript. It might be worth tracking down and adding to the IMSLP.

Debussy - D'un cahier d'esquisses - Orchestrations
I've read several times of the suspicion that D'un cahier d'esquisses may have been a 'trial run' for La Mer , recently I stumbled across a quote in the liner notes to the Naxos series of recordings of Debussy's piano works that something that might be interesting to hunt down and add. D'un cahier d...
