Arrangements

I noticed that someone posted a guitar arrangement by Jean-François Delcamp of the Albeniz: Asturias from the Suite Espanola, Op. 47 . This appears to be a recent arragement that would of course come under copyright protection. The uploader was not the arranger so I think we should remove this absen...

I'm not completely surprised that an American copyright lawyer would be unaware of some of the odd twists and turns of our copyright law. It really is amazingly convoluted. The area of 'orphan works' is a particularly complicated one. (Orphan works are works still under copyright where there is no a...

I'm not terribly surprised by this type of outburst. This is but another example of what I like to refer to as the "gatekeeper" mentality one runs across among some music publishers and librarians. In the orchestra world, there are legendary stories of certain notorious publishers conning ...

He died in 1960, so I expect you'll need to move the files to the US server.

BTW, Shostakovich is phoentically closer in most western languages. The Russian spelliing begins with the letter "sha", the Cyrillic letter that looks like a squared-off "w" or a capital "E" turned on its side. "Ch" is pronounced similarly (but not identically...

As far as I know, there are only a couple of minor Shostakovich piano works that were actually published in 1921 or 1922 - thus public domain in the USA only. The vast bulk of his works was "restored" to copyright status in the US thanks to the GATT treaty and the associated amendments to ...

Copyright Thread

Would it be possible to set up "Copyright, etc." as a separate category like "Moderator Requests" is presently? I expect this will be an ongoing topic, especially as more people join.

Unfortunately, I think it's best to play it safe here. The Alexandrov appears to be a very inetersting work, and I did not find an NIE for it over at the copyright office. As a Canadian, you have much to be thankful for with the remarkable clarity and relative simplicity of Canada's copyright laws. ...

It is a happy first birthday indeed! Congratulations to everyone for making IMSLP an absolute must-visit site for anyone interested in downloadable notated music. In the short space of a year, IMSLP has 2000 titles and over 3700 files. Special congratulations also to Feldmahler for having the idea t...

The Sibley citation probably refers to the year of composition. If you look at the cover (p. 1) and the title page (p. 3), the date printed is 1924 (which is the publication date). The title page at the bottom reads: "Gosudarstvennoe Izdatelstvo / Muzikalnii Sektor / Moskva / 1924" It's ra...

Copyright - Alexandrov

These works are certainly not PD in either Canada or the EU. As they appear to have been first published after 1922, their likelihood of being free in the USA is dubious at best as well. They have not been repriinted by Masters or any of the other reprint places, probably due more to their obscurity...

The Schulz editions were published without a notice back in the Nazi era (ca.1942). That, coupled with their 25-year term of protection in Germany, means they are free in the USA also. They've been reprinted by Kalmus/Belwin/CPP/Alfred.

CD Sheet Music Logos

Just a note. The recent posting of the Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 4 includes the CDSM logo. This should be removed ASAP.
