Are people in Romania allowed to download IMSLP content?

Post by Sergiu-Daniel »

I tried looking up copyright information online for my country, Romania, but I can't find any and I don't know where to call exactly. Would anyone of you moderators know? We are a EU member. Does that entitle us to the IMSLP database?

Thanks!

It really depends on the piece. Individual files are tagged for their copyright status in three major denominations of copyright law - Canada (and other life-plus-50 countries, such as China or Japan), the US, and the EU (and other life-plus-70 countries, like Russia or Brazil). These are the V/V/V (or similar) indications that appear on each file entry. If a file is under copyright in one of those three places, a boldface red notice will appear under the file: 'Non-PD EU' (etc.). If that notice does not appear, there is no legal reason why Romanians (or any other Europeans - although there are exceptions for France) couldn't download the file.
