Is there a set of guidelines as to which spelling standard is preferred, specifically US versus UK/International spelling?

I have noticed that many of my contributions have had "colour" (the way I normally spell the word) changed to "color", presumably to follow US spelling conventions. Is US spelling a requirement, or is that a matter of personal preference?

And is this note a half note of a minim? And this one an eighth note of a quaver? etc
