Uploading recordings of song cycles

Post by haydenmuhl »

Are there any guidelines on how to upload works with many, many movements, such as song cycles?

One large file:
- Little clutter on the work page
- Sound file potentially very large
- Difficult to excerpt individual songs (commonly needed for song cycles)

One file per song:
- Potentially long list of sound files cluttering the work page
- Individual files are small
- Individual songs are easy to excerpt

Thoughts?

There are no guidelines, but I think the most commonly followed format is to use one file per individual song. IMHO the advantages of easiness of excerpting and small file size outweigh the mutually exclusive advantage of little clutter (partially because of the table of contents, I guess).

Either is fine, but an entire song cycle can be huge. The recording for Die Schöne Müllerin, D.795 (over an hour long) I uploaded took quite a while.

One large file would be absolutely, hideously, stupid. Especially if the file isn't lossless. I can't see how anyone would even think that was a good idea.
