Del Mel's madrigals for six voices

Postby mlillhan » Fri Jan 20, 2012 8:25 am

Just a matter of clarification: The volume indicated on IMSLP as Rinaldo Del Mel's second book of madrigals for six voices is in fact a numberless print from the Phalése print shop in Antwerp (1588). It contains items later included in the "official" books two and three, released by Vincenti (1593) and Gardano (1593) respectively. This according to Il Nuovo Vogel. A clearer way of indicating this would be to call it "Madrigali di Rinaldo Del Melle", the way it reads on the print itself.
I have been working on an edition of this particular print and will continue uploading the results in coming months.

This is a collection of madrigals assembled by the Antwerp publisher without the composer's knowledge then? Or, was it simply an early version of Book 2 - with new items added which later were included the official books two and three? Once again, the problem of how we deal with collections - especially those assembled by someone other than the composer - rears it increasingly ugly head.
