Scores (+ parts!)

Post by tad1989 »

Hey all!

Ever since I found the IMSLP a few months back I have been overwhelmed by the amount of content available and how easily it can be obtained. I've spent several years prior trawling through google lists looking for scores and its about time things got a bit easier!!

One thing I would suggest is that would it be possible to get parts for scores as well and have this as another section of the IMSLP? I know with some of the duets and trios already on the site, parts have been included but for the bigger works, it would be great to have parts too (I'm hoping to start up and orchestra soon and really don't want to be forking out loads of money!!)

Indeed, having parts would be nice, but the main problem is that most of the scans come from score books, and so we don't always have the parts to scan! In my view, parts could be submitted on the same page as the main work, maybe under a section called 'Parts', so another section of the site wouldn't be necessary.

If you're interested in creating parts, you could obtain one of the public domain scores on the site and transcribe it using a notation program, such as Lilypond ( http://www.lilypond.org/ ), Noteworthy Composer ( http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/ ), Finale ( http://www.finale.com/ ), or Sibelius ( http://www.sibelius.com/ ), in order of inscreasing price (though not, IMO, quality) ;-). Some of us do this already, although I usually submit my transcriptions to the Mutopia Project ( http://www.mutopiaproject.org/ ), generally because IMSLP has the score, and scans are more highly encouraged than transcriptions, though I think I will submit the parts here as well.
