Variations Project to IMSLP

Post by trumpetking04 »

I found a very easy way to download Variations Scores for Firefox users (there is probably another way to do it for IE, but this tutorial will be Firefox only.) The setup is a little complex, but once you get the hang of it the process becomes very simple.

Note: Read carefully; FlashGet and FlashGot are two different programs!

1. Download the handy Firefox extension called "FlashGot" (it is a download manager that allows batch downloads.) https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/220/

2. Next, download any standalone download manager. The one I used is called FlashGet
http://down5.flashget.com/fg180b1en.exe

3. Install both programs, and make sure to change the settings on FlashGot to select FlashGet as your preferred download manager.

4. Now, browse through Variations http://www.dlib.indiana.edu/variations/scores/
and find a score that you would like to make a PDF of. Choose to view it in "Larger, Scrollable Version" for best results.

5. On the left sidebar, choose the particular movement or piece of that score you would like to download.

6. Right click on the first page of that section. It should be the large image in the main window of your browser.

7. Move your mouse to "FlashGot Options" and make sure that "Include Images Found in Current Page is selected."

8. Now, right click again and press "FlashGot All." If your download manager FlashGet is running, a window should come up asking you which files you want to download. Select all of the files that have the filename "sco###" (the letters "sco" and some numbers.)

9. Continue to download those files to your predetermined Download folder.

10. Go to the folder and open the first page of your downloaded images.
It should open in Microsoft Scan Viewer or something similar.

11. Press PRINT. If you are using the Microsoft program, a wizard should appear where you can select images. Make sure to "Select All" so you don't have to individually print each page.

12. DO NOT PRINT TO YOUR PRINTER, Print to PDF using software like the free PDF995. http://www.pdf995.com/download.html

13. Hopefully, you will now have a perfect, medium resolution PDF of the Variations score. Although the initial process takes 10 minutes or so, it will save you the hassle of downloading each individual JPEG for every score!

*delete the image files of the score when you are finished to avoid confusion with other scores you download

Post with any questions!

Oops. Don't make the mistake I did of accidentally only getting one of the rehearsal marks on certain works!

Make sure you download the whole piece; some pieces are split up by tempo changes, measure numbers, etc.
