List of imposed works at the Paris Conservatoire by instrument

Post by Puzzi22 »

Hello there!
I have been uploading lots of work for horn, many of which were "Pièces de Concours" at the Paris Conservatory throughout the 19th and early 20th century. I was thinking it might be a nice and useful resource to have a page listing all the imposed works at the Conservatoire for one given instrument with links redirecting to the works which have been uploaded already on IMSLP.
How would I create such a page? Could someone help me with this?
Thanks a lot in advance!

This is a cool idea. I imagine that the main part of the page would be a sortable table with columns for year, instrument(s), composer, work title, and perhaps notes. A template could be created that would be on the Extra Information line in the work information section of each work's page linking it back to the Pièces de Concours page. Do you know of a source listing all of these pieces?

I'm glad you like the idea! Yes, I do have a list. From 1824 to 1900 it is included in Pierre Constant' book "Le Conservatoire national de musique et de déclamation" on pages 641 (natural horn, or cor simple) and 645 (piston horn/cor à pistons). Furthermore, I have a list from 1900 to 2006.

Your idea of a sortable table is great, with a template on the Extra Information line. Unfortunately I wouldn't know how to start to create such a thing. Could you help me set it up and then I could do the bulk of the work?

Thanks a lot!

I have created the following page: Morceaux de concours. I jumped ahead to 1845 to give you an example of using the CSW template to link both the composer's name and the work page. I'll create a template later.

Thank you so much! I've started a little bit, but I will do more in the next few days. What would you suggest doing with the years with two composers/pieces?

I just made some changes to the table. It's best to devote one row to one musical work. Otherwise, when you sort by composer (or work title) the second composer for that year (or second work if by the same composer) gets lost. Also, for purposes of alphabetic sorting it is probably best to title work as Solo No.12 as opposed to 12th Solo.

I have now created a template which is linked on the Morceaux de concours page. I've added it to both linked works so you can see how it works. Adding the dates is optional. If you just use {{Mdc}} it will only display the first sentence. You may want to change the wording.

Thank you so much! A bit of a stupid question: the template (with or w/out dates) needs to be added manually to every piece that is the library, right?

Also, it might be nice to include a section at the top with the names and dates of activity of the teachers at the Conservatoire. It would read as follow (more or less, corrections to be made):

Natural Horn
Antoine Buch (1795-1802)
Jean-Joseph Kenn (1795-1802)
Heinrich Domnich (1795-1817) - Class abolished in 1817
Frédéric-Nicolas Duvernoy (1795-1815)
Louis-François Dauprat (1816-1842)
Jacques-François Gallay (1842-1864)
Jean-Baptiste-Victor Mohr (1864-1891)
François Brémond (1891-1903) - The piston horn became the official instrument taught at the Conservatoire in 1903
---
Michel Garcin-Marrou (1994-2006) - The natural horn class was reopened.
Claude Maury (2006-present)

Piston Horn
Pierre-Joseph Meifred (1833-1864) - Class abolished on November 3rd, 1864
---
François Brémond (1903-1923) - The piston horn became the official instrument taught at the Conservatoire in 1903
Fernand-Louis-Philippe Reine (1923-1933)
Louis-Edouard Vuillermoz (1934-1937)
Jean-Fernand-Paul Devemy (1937-1969)
Georges Barboteu (1969-1989)
André Cazalet (1985-...)
Jacques Adnet (1989-...)
Jacques Deleplancque (?)

For each piece that has a work page you should edit the page and add the following line (this example without dates):

Code: Select all

|Extra Information={{Mdc}}
which is placed in the *****WORK INFO***** area. You can see an example on this page.

I'll see about creating a table for the instructors later tonight.

Do you think it might be a good idea to do different pages for every instrument? It might become overly crowded as there are virtually thousands of pieces to be added to the list? Just wondering...

Possibly. As I was adding the clarinet works it was becoming a monster of a table. For the time being let's set up separate tables for each instrument. I've made both tables collapsible to reduce the page length.

It looks very nice! Do you believe stopping at 1950 is a good idea? We could possibly go until present too.

If we have the information we may as well post it. On the clarinet list 1950 was as far as I got before running out of steam.

Shall I put surnames of composers first (the ones who don't have a IMSLP composer page), so as to allow searching by their last names?
