Rachmaninoff's "5th" Piano Concerto

Post by musicman18 »

I recently ran across Alexander Warenburg's re-arranging of Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 into a Piano Concerto. Have any of you also heard it, and what are your opinions if you have?

I believe there's actually a thread about this from a while back ago....

I hope Warenberg didn't arrange or perform Rachmanninov's Second Symphony into a piano concerto in the EU -- where all of Rachmanninov's music is still protected. I am particularly interested in Rachmanninov's copyright status, since I have arranged his Cello/Piano Sonata into a cello concerto (in the U. S., where the Cello/Piano Sonata is now PD.)

Ah, the so called 5th Piano Concerto, I heard only in piano minus the orchestra, and I'm telling you :O it is simply amazing, Pianist Valentina Lisitsa uploaded it on youtube, here is the link if anyone wants to her the arrangement :)

That's a very great rendition, and superb playing of Valentina Lisitsa. I think that Warrenberg's arrangement of the Symphony is very well done, but there's too much going on in the left hand.

If Rachmaninoff authorized this in his lifetime, his would be more elaborate. But indeed this was a very well done excerpt.

Recently the Korean Pianist, Julius Kim, recorded Rachmaninoff's " 5th" Piano Concerto!
