Sammartini Recorder Sonatas

Post by ngoursky »

Composer Sammartini, Giuseppe
Movements/Sections 4 sonatas:
1. Recorder Sonata in C major (1)
2. Recorder Sonata in F major (6)
3. Recorder Sonata in F major (1)
4. Recorder Sonata in B-flat major (3)
Piece Style Baroque
Instrumentation Recorder and Continuo

There appears to be a cataloguing error. The pieces that are stored here seem to be violin works by Geminiani (according to a handwritten marginal note in the music of the first sonata). Stylistically they also appear better suited to the violin than to the poor old recorder. I say this as a reasonably good recorder player.

In RISM they say clearly, that these sonatas are originally flute sonatas by Sammartini.

I should have checked this before, but the title page actually refers to "6 Sonate co Violino et Basso del Sigr Geminiany (sic)"
