Respighi - Violin Concerto (Concerto all'Antica)

Postby seph702 » Sat Jan 02, 2010 12:54 pm

This is a little embarrassing, but I cannot find Respighi's Concerto all'Antica anywhere on the internet, even for purchase. There's a study score that was just published a couple of years ago, but that doesn't help me as I'm looking for the solo part with (hopefully) piano reduction. I find it a little surprising that it basically doesn't exist since I have a few recordings of it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

By the way, if you're not familiar with it, give it a listen. It's gorgeous-- especially the second movement.

Usually, information about where to obtain performance material should be included in the study scores reproduced by Musikproduktion Höflich. - In this case its relatively simple: Its in the Ricordi catalog, but nothing for sale is listed, so it may only be available for hire.
You would have to inquire at Ricordi about the violin solo part for perusal or an archive copy.

Hi,
i believe it is also published by Editioni Bongiovanni. I found in their catalog http://www.bongiovanni70.com/ a "Concerto in A major". I think it is a mistake of the seller. The concerto all'antica is in A minor and I am not aware if any other concerto in for Violin in A major written by Respighi.
You can contact the publisher and ask.
The plate is EB3015

You can also buy (if it is the same piece) at http://www.musigramma.com both vl, pf score or the complete orchestral parts

Unfortunately, this will indeed be the (incomplete) concerto in A major (2 movements).
If you search in the Bongiovanni catalog for CDs of Respighi, you find a recording of this piece "First world recording"

Its can also be found in the catalog http://www.ottorinorespighi.it/catalogo_cerca.php
and with track listings and sound samples on amazon.com

I contacted Ricordi and they said the parts are only available for rental, not purchase.

When I found the study score for the piece previously, the publishers of the study score listed Editioni Bongiovanni as a source for parts to the concerto. I sent an e-mail to both contacts on their website and never heard a response.

Any other ideas? I've largely given up hope.

It seems criminal that I am unable to pay for sheet music of a pretty terrific violin concerto. No wonder it's not a popular concerto; no one sells it!

What exactly are you after here? From your first posted it looked like the piano reduction with solo part, which, as cstesibius said, is available from MusiGramma with the full score available from MPH.

The link above is to Respighi's unfinished concerto in la maggiore (A major). The concerto I'm looking for is a totally different piece in A minor called the concerto all'antica.

Hi,
I called Bongiovanni. They told me the piece in their catalog is the unfinished concerto in A major as kalliwoda said.
They do not have the orchestral parts of the concerto all'antica as mentioned in Musikproduktion Hoeflich website.

So,
the solution seems to be:
1. buy the pocket score by Musikproduktion Hoeflich. You can by via paypal. Cost 29 euros
http://www.musikmph.de/musical_scores/vorworte/780.html
Respighi, Ottorino Concerto all' Antica per violino ed Orchestra (composers autograph) 780 142 29.00

2. search in university libraries.
I found it at the university of washington.

http://www.lib.washington.edu/Music/Acq ... Aug09.html

Author: Respighi, Ottorino, 1879-1936.
Title: Concerto all'antica : per violino ed orchestra
Pub. Info: Munchen : Musikproduktion Hoeflich, [2008?].
Location: Music Stacks
Call Number: M1012.R47 C6 2008.

try to write/call them. It can be they scan and send the pdf. Or ask someone in the USA to scan for you....

3. organize a concert and rent the parts from Ricordi.
it can be it is no so expensive. Have you asked for it?

Cheers

One suggestion:

If you have an association with an orchestra, you can contact Ricordi with the request for the violin part only, for study purposes for lets say 3 months, because you are planning to schedule a performance for some later time and want to first know the piece well before you agree on a concert date.
Most likely they will send you the part (rather than the entire set) for a pretty low fee, and even this (minus postage) will be substracted from the rental fee, if a concert is scheduled within the next 2 years.

In this way I was able to obtain the complete sets for some wind ensembles from Eschig (i.e. Ricordi Deutschland), Schott and Boosey for a rehearsal with our group, so that we could decide if the piece was worth considering for a concert. Price was 60-80 euro plus postage for the 8-10 parts plus score, for a 4 week rental, that is about 40% of their fee for a concert by an amateur ensemble. A single part should be much cheaper, and study scores are usually send for the postage cost only for a 4 week perusal.

Thanks for the suggestions. You folks have been pretty helpful.

I have one hypothetical question though-- suppose I were to buy the study score. If I then did my own typesetting of individual parts, would I be able to upload those to IMSLP since the work was written over 100 years ago?

Hi,
I am not so sure. You should ask Carolus.
Have a look to a similar discussion about Puccini Requiem here
http://imslpforums.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=3144

If the Hoeflich edition is a facsimile it should be fine. Otherwise you could have problems with US copyright

Any chance to have from libraries?

Ottorino Respighi's unfinished first violin concerto, Concerto per Violino (in La Maggiore) of 1903, was completed in 2009 by Italian composer/conductor Salvatore Di Vittorio (upon invitation of Respighi's descendants and archive curator). The completed concerto is published by Panastudio in Italy: http://www.panastudio.it/mediastore/cat049.htm

Excerpts of the World Premiere of this completed version can be seen on YouTube:

The completed concerto along with other Respighi rediscoveries will be released on Naxos in the Summer 2011.
