BOUNTY: Viaggio a Reims (Rossini)

Postby Jomangor » Mon Jun 11, 2012 5:43 am

I'm looking for a full score of Viaggio a Reims by Rossini. As of this writing, nothing besides the overture has been uploaded to the Reims page, so my only recourse is to buy a score.

Alternatively, I'd love to take the money I would spend on a piano/vocal (and perhaps a bit more) and give it to the contributor who could scan and upload the score to the IMSLP. Any takers?

I guess that the full score of this work was first published by Fondazione Rossini in 1999:

http://www.fondazionerossini.com/shop/?p=185

Such edition includes two volumes (total 942 pages) plus a critical commentary of 220 pages. Price Euro 155. Due to "urtext" (and possibly "editio princeps") provisions this edition is copyrighted in the EU until 2024, and thus not eligible for publication on IMSLP until then.

A vocal score with piano reduction obtained form the above edition was published by Ricordi in 2006 (523 pages, priced around 60 - 75 Euro at some online stores). A piano reduction is usually eligible for full copyright, not just for "urtext" or "editio princeps" protection, so this edition will still be under copyright for many years.

If the above is correct I think that, due to copyright reasons, nobody can take this task in the near future. Thank you anyway for the proposal.

My university did this opera a year or so ago, but rented the parts.

According to Wikipedia, it was considered lost, but then "re-found and re-assembled in the 1970s by the musicologist Janet Johnson, with the help of Philip Gossett." The "re-assembled" refers to the fact that, since Rossini didn't think it would get more than 4 performances, he re-used much of the material.

Nevertheless, the 1970s would be the earliest copyright date, and on top of that, copyright may depend on the life spans of Johnson and Gossett, hence it will not be PD for a very long time.

From what you're telling me, it looks like I'm out of luck for copyright reasons into the next decade. Thanks for setting me straight, and I'm sorry for proposing an impossible project.
