Baroque pieces transcribed for piano?

Post by lovebaroque »

Hi All,
I have a hankering for baroque music but I'm having trouble finding pieces that have been transcribed for piano only. I have only found the Arcangelo Corelli "Album fur klavier" which was arranged by Carl Reinecke.

Also, I am using the word transcribed but should I be using "arranged for piano..." instead?

Can someone point me to the correct area?

Thank you so much!

Hi,
I guess you mean transcriptions of baroque concerts. (For the thousand of harpsichord or organ baroque pieces search for harpsichord, cembalo organ in the library)
The first work one should mention are the 16 concerts transcribed by JSB Bwv972-987) http://imslp.org/wiki/16_Konzerte_nach_ ... Sebastian)

Very popular are also the transcription of Corelli op.6 by Billington
http://imslp.org/wiki/12_Concerti_Gross ... Arcangelo)

or the ones by Avison (op.2, op.3, etc)
http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Avison,_Charles

Enjoy the 65 ouvertures by Haendel,
http://imslp.org/wiki/Overtures_(Handel ... _Frideric)

have a look to the category "For Harpsichord (arr)
http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:For_harpsichord_(arr)

And in general you can easily read baroque concerts directly from the score, like musicians were used to do at the time

if you are looking for adaptation or free transcriptions for piano of baroque pieces
have a look to
- transcriptions by Busoni (click on 'as arranger tab')
http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Busoni,_Ferruccio

- Respighi transcription of Frescobaldi's Passacaglia or Prelude and Fugue
- Bartok's transcription of Frescobaldi Toccata F3.05
http://imslp.org/wiki/Toccata_quinta_so ... _Girolamo)

There are many transcriptions by
- Percy Grainger (1882-1961)
- William Murdoch (1888-1942)
- Ignacy Friedman (1882-1948)
http://imslp.org/wiki/Piano_Transcripti ... an,_Ignaz)
http://imslp.org/wiki/Piano_Transcripti ... Sebastian)
- Alexander Siloti (1863-1945)
http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Siloti,_Alexander

- Max Reger(1873-1916), even if mostly for 4h piano
http://imslp.org/wiki/Bach_Transcriptions_(Reger,_Max)

and the great
- Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938)(good luck!)
http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp ... e=8.223795

some very famous pieces have been transcribed so many times...
e.g
Bach (Kellner?) BWV 565
http://imslp.org/wiki/Toccata_and_Fugue ... Sebastian)

Bach BWV 1004,5
especially by Brahms and Busoni
http://imslp.org/wiki/Violin_Partita_No ... Sebastian)

Hope this helps

Type arrangements baroque "for piano" into the imslp search field, but expect some off-topic results e.g talk pages. You can add more search terms e.g. concerto or exclude terms e.g. -organ if you don't want arrangements of organ pieces.

Are you open to Baroque pieces for a group of musicians, arranged for harpsichord in Baroque times but played on a piano nowadays?

August Stradal also transcribed various Baroque works for piano

And there are innumerable J.S. Bach piano transcriptions (Bach is probably the composer who has been transcribed/arranged most for piano)

Through the Category Walker you can look for all baroque works with at least one score arranged for piano here on IMSLP. Until the moment, there are 212 works, see here.
