Ethel Smith Cello Sonata in C minor (1880)

Hi,

I have noticed that the Cello Sonata in C minor (from 1880) is missing at the Ethel Smyth wiki

http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Smyth,_Ethel

The only source I have from this Sonata is a CD from 1997 (see image attached)

It has the first motive of Franz Schubert Arpeggione Sonata (1824) - not sure if it is intentional...

If someone could get the score and cello part of this Sonata, I will be eternally grateful, and I am sure mostly all cellists around,,,,

Thank you,

Danilo Chaib

Interestingly, it seems there is some confusion regarding this work and its A minor counterpart from 1887. The British Library have the manuscript in their collection (see http://searcharchives.bl.uk/IAMS_VU2:IAMS040-002018869 ), though they refer to it as being published in 1887, by Peters. I guess the only way to find out is to check the Ms with your own eyes!

cheers,
Daniel

Well, let us know how it works out! (Or if you posted that, not to tell us you were planning on doing it, but just to complain about the prices they charge... I regret to inform/suggest to you (:) ) that to some people (me? maybe no one else?), at least, it's not news, and if it elicits any outrage, it's directed, not at the British Library and others in Europe but at the governmental - skinflints, is that the word? - who increasingly are decreasing their funding, I gather. (I suspect probably in the US too with the LoC, unfortunately. These libraries are national treasures and heritages, many of which- including the British Library, definitely including e.g. BNF and LoC eg - do have scanning programs of differing sizes which they post publicly that contribute potentially -to- education and heritage- aie. Don't let me get started, especially when I should be getting ready for something else...)

Dear Danilo
I have just recorded the Ethel Smyth c min sonata . It is a marvellous work that i have performed several times. The recording that you have seen is incomplete as the 3rd movement only has the Theme but none of Variations .
I'm hoping to get this work published when my CD is released shortly.
I hope this is of interest to you.
Best wishes
Lionel Handy

Isn't her last name spelled with a "y" , as in "Smyth" ?

Yes. Dame Ethel Mary Smyth (1858-1944).

Well, that was a rhetorical question, since the headers for the thread had "Smith", even when her name was spelled correctly within the comments.

and I don't know what changing the subject line will do - split this into 2 threads? press the "don't press that button you'll blow us all to bits" button? nothing? solve the problem? I just don't know.

Dear Lionel,
I'm listening right now to your recordings of Ethel Smyth's two sonatas. It's brilliant, bravo to both of you.
It seems that you found the A minor manuscript... I'm looking forward to perform it... Would you agree to share it with me ? Or to help me find it ?
Kind Regards,
Patrick Langot
