Teleman TWV 40:101-106

Post by bbbitt »

The No. 4 in Nos. 4-6 for cello under transcriptions does not seem to be the right duet. It doesn't match the manuscript scan under Parts. I didn't check anything else.

On further checking it seems likely that
The Parts are from First Edition and presumably are 101 thru 106.
Sonata 1 in the Parts is Sonata 3 in Viola Arrangement
Sonata 2 in the Parts is Sonata 1 in Viola Arrangement
Sonata 3 in the Parts is Sonata 5 in Viola Arrangement
Sonata 4 in the Parts is Sonata 2 in Viola Arrangement
Sonata 5 in the Parts is Sonata 4 in Viola Arrangement
Sonata 6 in the Parts is Sonata 6 in Viola Arrangement

Does anyone know for sure which TWV numbers go with which Sonata?

Have a look at the TWV catalogue
The TWV numbering seems to be different to the original Telemann (printed, not manuscript) parts.
Then:
Sonata 1 in the Parts = Sonata 3 in Murray's Arrangements (also in Claessens' score) = TWV 40:102 (D Major)
Sonata 2 in the Parts = Sonata 1 in Murray's Arrangements = TWV 40:101 (G Major)
Sonata 3 in the Parts = Sonata 5 in Murray's Arrangements = TWV 40:103 (A Major)
Sonata 4 in the Parts = Sonata 2 in Murray's Arrangements = TWV 40:104 (E minor)
Sonata 5 in the Parts = Sonata 4 in Murray's Arrangements = TWV 40:105 (B minor)
Sonata 6 in the Parts = Sonata 6 in Murray's Arrangements = TWV 40:106 (E Major)
Note that Murray's Viola Arrangements are said to be transposed, and indeed they are; Murray's Cello Arrangements aren't supposed to be transposed, but they also aren't in Telemann's original keys.
Hrm. This is a perfect candidate for a sortable table.

Done.
The "sortable" feature doesn't work...
